A study was conducted for number of injuries happening at work places which included self-employed and salaried and data revealed nearly 60 such incidents happening over 1000 people at work site which might sound a small number but has alarming implications as not all incidents have a happy ending i.e. even deaths occur as in 2011-12 nearly 111 men and 9 women died at their work place because of work related accidents. In such scenarios, one should be trained to keep hazards at bay.Certificate IV in OHS like courses are the game-change here.So it is a must to reduce number of incidents and also to keep first yourself safe and then your colleague. Here are the biggest reasons for such incidents and injuries:
- Falls: Most of the employees get injured while falling from a height. This is simply because they do not use safety while working at height. Ensure that all safety equipment is available before work at height commences also work at height only if there is no alternative available.
- Slips and Trips: Slippery floors are very dangerous and can be found anywhere, be it a factory floor or some water spilled in an office. Ensure the work area is dry and there is no spillage of any kind including water and oil. Wet board to be used when cleaning is going on in the work place to ensure passer-by’s aware of the risk.
- Burns: Heavy and dangerous chemicals are used at industrial work places. Chemicals like cleaning acid, H2SO4 etc. could burn the skin even with slight touch. Ensure proper safety items like gloves are worn while handling them and there is no loose clothing.
- Muscle Strain: They are the most common and very painful. Muscle strain can happen while lifting weight or sitting for the whole day without movement or spraining the ankle while working, the list is endless but so is the pain. Ensure proper equipment is used and right posture is maintained at work.
These are the most common types of injuries which happen at work and can be easily avoided if some precautions are taken. Always ensure you have the right work environment which does not invite accidents and also make sure you have right equipment which also work without any flaw.
